Remuneration for family carers - Frequently asked questions

  • Why is it possible to be employed to care for relatives?

In Switzerland, a federal court ruling in 2021 stipulated that health insurance companies must cover the costs of basic care provided by a family member. This regulation allows relatives who provide care services for a family member to be employed via a Spitex provider such as SpitexCare.

  • Can I be employed without nursing training?

Thanks to the new legal regulations in Switzerland, it is now possible to be employed and paid as a family caregiver. You do not need any training for this. However, if you wish, we can support you with training and further education or take on care and support tasks on a short-term or long-term basis.
  • How many hours will I be employed for?

When you are employed by SpitexCare, you will receive an employment contract in which your workload is clearly defined. The workload is based on the living situation of your family member providing care. As part of a needs analysis, we will visit you at home and determine the care requirements that define your workload.
  • What if I need a vacation?

We provideshort-term care and support services so that you can relax.
  • Does the health insurance fund cover the care costs?

Insurance cover in Switzerland is excellent. For example, 90% of the costs for medically prescribed care services are covered, regardless of which insurance you have. This also applies if basic care is provided by relatives.
